Top 5 Okanagan Spots for a Quick Getaway

One of the best things about living in the Okanagan is that a proper getaway doesn’t require much planning — or much driving. Whether you’ve got a free afternoon or a spare weekend, there are plenty of spots nearby that feel like a reset without the hassle. Here are five of my go-to Okanagan escapes when I need a change of scenery, fast.

1. Naramata Bench
If slowing down is the goal, Naramata delivers. Just 45 minutes from Kelowna, it feels like a different pace entirely. Think quiet roads, lake views, small wineries, and beaches where you can actually hear yourself think. It’s perfect for a relaxed day of wine tasting, a bike ride along the bench, or a low-key overnight stay with sunset views over Okanagan Lake.

2. Oyama & Wood Lake
Often overlooked, Oyama is one of the most underrated quick escapes in the valley. With Wood Lake on one side and Kalamalka Lake on the other, you’re surrounded by clear water and great swimming spots. It’s ideal for a spontaneous summer day trip — pack a picnic, jump in the lake, and be home before dark feeling like you went somewhere far away.

3. Penticton
Penticton manages to be both laid-back and lively, depending on what you’re after. You’ve got beaches on both ends of town, the KVR Trail for biking or walking, and a growing brewery scene that’s easy to spend an afternoon exploring. It’s close enough for a day trip but fun enough to justify a weekend, especially in shoulder season.

4. Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park
When you want nature without a long drive, this is hard to beat. The Myra Canyon trestles are an easy win — incredible views, minimal effort, and accessible for most fitness levels. Even a short walk out and back feels like a mini adventure, and it’s close enough to squeeze in after work.

5. Vernon (with a Kalamalka Lake stop)
Vernon has quietly become a great base for a quick getaway. Kalamalka Lake alone is worth the trip — that unreal turquoise water never gets old. Add in nearby hikes, beaches, and a solid food scene, and it’s an easy choice when you want options without crowds.

The magic of the Okanagan is that “getting away” doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes all it takes is a tank of gas, a free afternoon, and a willingness to explore just a little closer to home.
